The Pier Aquarium
Founded in 1988, The Pier Aquarium brings to life examples of the marine research and technology taking place in the Tampa Bay area. It is a private, not-for-profit aquarium and community marine education center located at The Pier in downtown St. Petersburg.
Visitors learn about our Tampa Bay environment before even setting foot in the aquarium!
Read about The Wonder of Water at the Roy G. Harrell, Jr. Education Station located along The Pier approach: Follow the journey of a drop of water in the Tampa Bay watershed to the ocean on the illustrated wall exhibits. Quiz yourself on water facts posted on flip board panel signs. Then learn more about Tampa Bay, the largest marine estuary in Florida, at our interpretive display, Water Walk, as you stroll to The Pier. “Kiosk” stations discuss the water environment, animals and plants that live in Tampa Bay and the importance of conservation.
Let Our Fish Entertain You!
At The Pier, three cylinder tanks in the first floor lobby are your first introduction to “Fresh Fish Theater” featuring live animals from the world ocean! Then go to the second floor to discover the fun of learning through an intimate look at the inhabitants of our 14 aquariums.
Explore our touch tank. Listen to the sounds of the sea. Watch a video and see the impact of a hurricane or Red Tide. Learn about threatened and protected species in Tampa Bay. Shopping in our museum store can be educational as well. Items for sale include marine science books for all ages, videos, music, clothing and fish-themed gifts and toys.
The Pier Aquarium’s outdoor and indoor exhibits and animal encounters translate marine science information and research being done right here in Tampa Bay to students, teachers, residents and visitors for a personal, fun and entertaining experience!
“Fresh Fish Theater” for Discovery in Our Own Backyard Educational school study activities are offered week day mornings to school groups at the Roy G. Harrell, Jr. Education Station, Spa Beach and the Aquarium. For more information on Education Programs, please contact Susan Sawyer, Marine Educator at (727) 895-7437, ext. 205 or e-mail ssawyer@pieraquarium.org.
The action at The Pier Aquarium never stops with daily scheduled activities including an up-close animal encounter and exploration with our Touch Tank Experience. Scheduled every day from 1-4pm, it includes a 3pm meal time. Feed our fish and receive an “Official Fish Feeder” certificate.
